SS Trekieve (1898-1917)

British merchant vessel SS Trekieve was built in 1898 by J Readhead & Sons, South Shields., and at the time of her loss a century ago, during WW1, she was owned by the Hain Steamship Co. Ltd., St. Ives.

On 18 April 1917, the steamer of 3,087 tonnes was on a voyage from Cardiff to Gibraltar with government cargo, when she was targeted and sunk by a German U-boat under the command of Lothar von Arnauld de la Perière. At the time, Trekieve was 100 miles west of her destination.

Sadly, three people lost their lives.

The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society has offered financial assistance for fishermen and mariners since 1839. The maritime charity provides help for mariners, retired seafarers and their dependants, through financial help including welfare grants, as well as assistance and support.
