SS Hawkinge (1924-1941)
SS Hawkinge was a British Cargo Steamer of 2,475 tonnes built in 1924. She was built as Pentraeth, then renamed Hawkinge in 1941.
On the 27 July 1941, the ship was en route from Glasgow to Lisbon carrying a cargo of 2,806 tonnes of coal when she was torpedoed by a German submarine and sunk about 800 miles southwest of Fastnet. 15 crew members were lost from a total of 31 aboard.
The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society provided the survivors with £52/5s worth of financial support – the equivalent of £2,636 today.
