<p>British cargo vessel, SS Hunsdon, was built in 1911 by Wesser Co., Bremen, originally for the Hamburg &amp; Africa Line. The steamer of 2,899 tonnes was owned at the time of her loss by The Shipping Controller, London.</p>

<p>On 18 October 1918, the Hunsdon was on route from Le Havre to Belfast when she was torpedoed without warning and sunk by a German U-boat commanded by Johannes Muller.</p>
<p>Sadly, one person lost their life as a result.</p>
<p>The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society has offered assistance for fishermen and mariners in need since 1839. The maritime charity provides help for mariners, retired seafarers and their dependants, through financial help including welfare grants, as well as assistance and support.</p>

<p>On 16 October 1918, SS War Council was travelling on a voyage from Barry to Port Said with a cargo of coal when she was torpedoed without warning and sunk by a German U-boat under the command of Kurt Hartwig. At the time of the attack, the War Council was located 85 miles WSW of Cape Matapan.</p>
<p>Thankfully, there were no casualties.</p>
<p>The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society has offered assistance for fishermen and mariners in need since 1839. The maritime charity provides help for mariners, retired seafarers and their dependants, through financial help including welfare grants, as well as assistance and support.</p>

<p>British merchant vessel SS Thalia was built in 1917 by Rijkee &amp; Co. N. V., Rotterdam. At the time of her loss a year later, the British steamer was owned by Richards, Turpin &amp; Co. Ltd., Swansea.</p>

<p>On 8 October 1918, whilst in a convey bound for the Tyne, the SS Thalia was torpedoed on the port side by a German U-boat. The starboard lifeboat was launched and the survivors got away just before the steamer of 1,308 tonnes sunk four miles ESE from Filey Brig. The survivors were picked up by escort vessel and landed at Scarborough.</p>
<p>Sadly, four lives were lost in the attack.</p>

<p>Sadly, the steamer of 1,001 tonnes was sunk with the loss of 11 lives.</p>

On 25 September 1918, the SS Hebburn was travelling on a voyage from Barry with a cargo of coal and general cargo when she was sunk by a mine from a German U-boat under the command of Wolf-Hans Hertwig. The steamer of 1,938 tonnes was lost 14 miles south of Mine Head.</p>
<p>Sadly, six lives were lost as a result.</p>

<p>British cargo vessel, SS Glenlee, was built in 1918 by Charles Connell &amp; Co. Ltd., Scotstoun and at the time of her loss in the same year, was owned by the Rio Cape Line Ltd., Glasgow.</p>

<p>On 9 August 1918, whilst travelling on a voyage from Dunkerque to Portland with a cargo of government stores, the Glenlee was sunk by a German U-boat under the command of Johannes Lohs. At the time of the attack, the British steamer of 4,915 tonnes was four miles ExN of the Owers lightvessel.</p>
<p>Sadly, one life was lost as a result.</p>

<p>On 24 July 1918, SS Rutherglen was travelling on a voyage from Newport to Genoa with a cargo of coal when she was torpedoed by a German U-boat under the command of Heinrich Kukat. At the time of the attack, the British ship was 50 miles east of Port Mahon, Menorca.</p>
<p>Thankfully, there were no casualties.</p>

<p>SS Justicia was a British troopship built in 1914 by Harland &amp; Wolff Ltd., Belfast. Before completion, Justicia was acquired by the British government and operated by the White Star Line.</p>

<p>On 19 July 1918, whilst travelling unladen from Belfast to New York, 23 miles south of Skerryvore, Scotland, the Justicia was torpedoed by a German U-boat under the command of Otto von Schrader. Despite being struck by four torpedoes, the steamer of 32,234 tonnes remained afloat, allowing the majority of those on board to evacuate.</p>
<p>The following day, two more torpedoed were fired at the Justicia, causing her to finally sink with the loss of 16 lives.</p>
