SS Cavina (1915-1917)

British merchant vessel, SS Cavina, was built in 1915 by Clark Workman & Co. Ltd., Belfast. At the time of her loss a century ago, the cargo ship of 6,539 tonnes was owned by Elders & Fyffes Ltd., Garston.

On 1 June 1917, Cavina was en route from Port Limon to Avonmouth, with a cargo of bananas and logwood, when she was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat under the command of Walther Schwieger. At the time, Cavina was 45 miles SW of Fastnet.

Thankfully, there were no casualties.

The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society has offered assistance for fishermen and mariners in need since 1839. The maritime charity provides help for mariners, retired seafarers and their dependants, through financial help including welfare grants, as well as assistance and support.
